Tout va bien quand Duke est le DJ... 

Si comme moi vous avez passé une bonne partie de votre vie de mélomane le nez dans les éditions successives du vénérable Penguin Guide to Jazz ou en ligne sur Allmusic, vous connaissez la relation trouble de l'amateur pour ces guides qui savent certes être éclairants mais aussi parfois frustrants dans leurs parti-pris, leurs omissions ou leur classement. Qui n'a pas songé faire son palmarès personnel, aller au-delà de la sempiternelle «liste pour l'île déserte», voire s'improviser spécialiste? Eh bien, en prenant comme modèle la dernière édition du Penguin Guide to Jazz de Brian Morton et du regretté Richard Cook, c'est ce que je me propose de faire ici. Avec cette liste en constante évolution, je n'ai pas l'ambition de dégager les «meilleurs disques de jazz» ou un quelconque «top-...», mais plutôt une discothèque idéale, comme il y a des bibliothèques idéales... J'essaierai de représenter tous les musiciens importants, même si certains de ceux-ci ne sont pas nécessairement parmi mes favoris. Petit à petit, j'essaierai de fournir une chronique pour chacun de mes choix.

Tout va bien quand Duke est le DJ... 

Autant l'amateur néophyte que l'intransigeant collectionneur peuvent trouver l'étendue des enregistrements de jazz proprement infinie, tous ont sans doute des carences dans leurs connaissances de certaines époques, certains styles, ou certains musiciens. J'ai tenté dans cette version vinyle de la discographie idéale de représenter tous les musiciens, genres et époques importantes tout en conservant cette étincelle (que Whitney Balliett avait nommée le «son de la surprise») dans chaque disque choisi ici. Pour les années qui s'étendent du ragtime au jazz cool (jusqu'au début des années 1950 environ), j'ai évidemment dû choisir des anthologies, notamment parmi les programmes de rééditions initiés dans les années 1970 par la plupart des grandes étiquettes (aux É-U comme en Europe, où une série comme Jazz Tribune de RCA en France était remarquable) autant que par certains labels spécialisés qui savaient dénicher les raretés introuvables (Herwin aux É-U, Retrieval en Angleterre, Tax en Suède, par exemple). Par la suite, la sélection est habituellement plus simple avec l'apparition des albums 33 tours, qui sont souvent réédités comme tels de nos jours (attention cependant aux nombreux labels qui se servent d'enregistrements de musiciens célèbres officiellement dans le domaine public pour produire des rééditions de qualité souvent douteuse...). La dernière période est évidemment plus délicate, la disparition de la plupart des parutions en vinyle dès 1989-1990 laissant une bonne partie du catalogue des années 90 et 2000 inaccessible aux vinylophages... Pour certains musiciens j'ai dû me replier sur des enregistrements antérieurs ou différents de ceux que j'avais initialement choisis dans la version CD, mais j'ai tenté de quand même représenter la même variété que dans cette dernière. Bon furetage!
